China direct vs US wholesale pet supply distributors

Wholesale pet supplies buying · Published 2026-08-26

US distributors and China-direct suppliers are both answering wholesale pet supplies. They are not the same product. One is selling you speed, mixed cartons and someone else's warehouse. The other is selling you a factory price, a lead time and a homework list.

We should say our position before the comparison. AXISLINK is a Hong Kong trading company sourcing in Yiwu and Shenzhen. We are the China-direct side of this table. That means we have an interest in it, and it means we will not publish a ranking of US distributors we do not sell through. What follows is the structural trade-off, including the cases where a domestic distributor is the better answer.

What you are actually buying

A US pet supply distributor buys in bulk, holds stock in a domestic warehouse, and sells you a carton or a mixed order that ships in days. You pay for that inventory service in the unit price. You also inherit their catalogue: the brands they carry, the sizes they chose, and the returns desk they run.

A China-direct order is a production or a warehouse pull on the other side of the Pacific. You buy more of fewer SKUs, you wait, and you take the import job. In return the unit cost can move enough to change the business, especially on bulky goods. The import job itself is a separate page: importing pet supplies from China to the USA. This page is only the make-or-buy between those two channels.

When a US distributor is the right call

Four cases, and they are real. Pretending otherwise is how China-direct sellers lose first-time buyers and then blame the customer.

  1. You do not yet know what sells. A domestic carton of mixed toys or grooming tools is a cheap experiment. A 300 piece dye lot of a colour you invented is not.
  2. You need goods next week. Ocean freight does not care about a holiday display. Distributors exist to absorb that calendar.
  3. You need a mixed basket below a factory minimum. A new store that wants 12 SKUs in small counts is a distributor customer. Forcing that basket onto a factory produces either a rejection or a bad price.
  4. Returns and warranty sit in your market. A bulky bed with a sizing complaint is cheaper to unwind through a domestic returns desk than through a port.

If the alternative you are considering is dropshipping rather than a real distributor, that is a different comparison: dropshipping vs wholesale pet supplies. Distributors hold stock. Dropshippers pass orders. Do not mix the two when you run the numbers.

When China direct is the right call

The crossover is not a revenue milestone. It is a product that you already sell, in a quantity you can forecast, whose landed cost beats the distributor's unit price by enough to pay for the cash tied up in the transit.

  • Repeat movers. The collar, the chew, the brush you reorder every season. Forecast error is small, so the inventory risk of a sea shipment is small.
  • Bulky goods. Beds, trees, carriers. Moving them one carton at a time from a US warehouse is often the most expensive way to move air. A container of the same goods can invert the arithmetic. Check cube and weight before you fall in love with a factory quote on FOB terms.
  • Anything you want your name on. Private label is a China-direct (or OEM) job. US distributors are not in the business of your woven label. See private label pet products.
  • A specification the catalogue will not give you. A different webbing, a different fill, a hardness on a chew. That is a factory conversation.

The homework that comes with this side is not optional. You still have to verify the supplier, and you still have to know who is importer of record. A door-to-door quote that buries DDP in a friendly number can leave you without the records a marketplace or a customs desk will later ask for.

The landed cost that actually decides it

Do not compare a distributor's each-price to a factory's each-price. Compare a distributor's each-price to a China-direct landed each: product, inland China, ocean or air, duty, last-mile, and the cash cost of the weeks the money is in the box. Incoterms decide which of those lines are already in the quote. EXW is not cheaper than FOB. It is a quote with more of your work left out. CIF is not door delivery. DDP is, and you should know whose name is on the entry.

A simple test per SKU:

  1. Take the distributor price you actually pay, not a list price.
  2. Build the China-direct landed cost at a quantity you would sell in one season, not a quantity that makes the spreadsheet pretty.
  3. Divide the saving into the extra capital the ocean order needs. That is how long the money is tied up to buy the saving.
  4. If you cannot sell the quantity in that window, the distributor is cheaper, even when the unit looks worse.

We will not publish a made-up margin or a typical duty. Duty depends on the HTS line, and margin depends on your channel. The point of the test is that you can run it on a real quotation. How to assemble the rest of a first wholesale order is in buying pet supplies wholesale.

The hybrid most stores actually run

This is rarely a religion. Stores that last tend to do both.

They buy the long tail and the surprise demand from a US distributor: the odd size, the seasonal extra, the SKU they are still testing. They buy the core from China, on a calendar that starts from the in-stock date they need and works backwards through production and the water. When a core SKU earns a brand, it moves into private label and stops being a distributor item at all.

Trying to China-direct the long tail is how containers fill with things you cannot sell. Trying to distributor-buy the core is how you never own a margin or a brand. The split is the strategy.

Working with AXISLINK

We are useful on the China-direct half of the split, not as a replacement for a US distributor's next-week carton. AXISLINK TRADING LIMITED will quote a landed comparison against a distributor price you already pay, on a quantity you name, and will say when the saving is not worth the wait.

If the SKU is on our product list, send the quantity and the US postcode or port you care about. If it is not, send a specification. Request a quote from the contact page, or email sales@axislinktrading.com. The rest of this pillar is indexed under wholesale buying.
