Where to buy dog beds in bulk, and how to spec the order

Wholesale pet supplies buying · Published 2026-08-27

Dog beds look cheap to buy in bulk until the carton arrives. The factory photograph is a loaf of plush. The shipment is compressed foam, vacuum bags and a cube that ate the margin. Buying beds wholesale is a packing problem first and a fabric problem second, and treating it as a colour decision is how retailers end up with a container they cannot warehouse or cannot sell.

This page is the buying process for beds specifically. The general wholesale mechanics (who you are dealing with, what to put in an RFQ, how to read MOQ) are in how to buy pet supplies wholesale. Cat trees share the furniture category and none of the packing logic; that buy is covered in how to choose a cat tree manufacturer.

Four beds, four different factories

Buyers quote dog beds as one line. They are not. The cover mill, the foam house and the stuffing shop are often three buildings, and mixing types on a first order is how you inherit three minimums and one unusable freight plan.

TypeWhat you are really buyingWhat usually fails
Donut and bolsterA sewn cover, a fill, an anti-slip base, vacuum packingFill that goes flat, a rim that will not recover after compression, dye that rubs onto a pale sofa
Orthopedic foamA foam slab, a removable cover, often a waterproof linerFoam that is not the density you sampled, a zip that splits, a cover that will not go back on after washing
Crate and kennel matsA thin pad cut to crate footprintsWrong footprint, a cover that bunches, a foam that smells in a closed crate
Elevated and outdoorA frame plus a textile deckHardware that rusts, a deck that sags, a frame that does not match the listed height

A first bulk lot should be one type. Donut beds are the usual e-commerce start because they compress and they photograph. Orthopedic foam is the usual specialty-shop start because the customer will pay for a named core. Crate mats look easy and die on size matching. Elevated beds are a furniture buy, closer to the cat tree problem than to a cushion.

The factory price is not the bed price

Beds are mostly air. A unit that looks generous on a sofa can be a poor sea-freight citizen, and a unit that looks modest can be the one that actually lands. Before you compare two quotations, put three numbers on the same page.

  1. The compressed carton. Donut beds should be vacuum packed. Ask for the compressed carton size and the pieces per carton, not the lofted display size. On our own calming donut line the 60 cm size packs 20 pieces to a carton; larger diameters move that number, and a supplier who will not give you the carton is not ready to quote freight.
  2. The recovery. Compression is only useful if the bed comes back. Sample one unit out of the bag, time the recovery, and keep that unit. Production that does not match it is a return, not a surprise.
  3. The dimensional weight at destination. If you sell online, the outbound carton from your warehouse is a second freight bill. A bed that ships cheap from China and expensive to your customer is not cheap.

Orthopedic foam is a different packing story. The core ships roll-compressed, often one unit to a carton. That is honest, and it is also why foam beds eat a container faster than the unit price suggests. Do not mix donut cartons and foam cartons in the same cube plan and then wonder why the quote moved.

Write the fill and the cover, not the colour

Colour is the last line on the specification. Quote a colour first and you will be quoted the cheapest fill that will hold that colour. Write the construction, then pick a stock colour from the mill.

  • Fill. For donuts and bolsters, name the fibre (polyester hollow fibre is the default), the weight, and whether the fill is in a liner. For foam, name the type (memory foam, egg-crate, high-resilience), the thickness, and a density in kg per cubic metre. "Orthopedic" is a marketing adjective until those three are on the purchase order.
  • Cover. Fabric, pile, whether it is removable, zip quality, and whether it is machine washable. A cover that cannot come off is a bed you will not be able to stand behind in a shop.
  • Liner. Waterproof inners are a separate fabric with their own failure (crackle, peel, a smell of their own). Specify them if you need them. Do not assume they are in the photograph.
  • Base. Anti-slip is a fabric, not a promise. Ask what it is, and rub it on a hard floor in the sample room.

On our published orthopedic bed the core is 5 cm egg-crate memory foam under a removable brushed cover with a waterproof liner, in three sizes: 80 x 60 cm, 100 x 70 cm and 120 x 80 cm. Those are the kind of numbers a quotation should already contain. A listing that gives you a photograph and a diameter is a retail page, not a wholesale specification. Browse the current beds and cat trees if you want to see packing written on a product page.

What to do to a sample before you comment on the pantone

Pay for samples in the size you will sell, not a miniature. Then do the unglamorous work.

  • Weigh the unit and measure it lofted and in the bag. Write the numbers down. Production that is lighter is a different product.
  • Wash the cover, twice, and see whether it still fits the core. Shrinkage is a return that arrives after the good reviews.
  • Leave a foam or filled sample in a warm room in a sealed bag for a few days and smell it. Odour that is mild on day 1 is a warehouse problem on day 10, and a crate mat that smells in a closed plastic box will smell in a crate.
  • Rub the fabric onto a white cloth, wet and dry. Colour rub on a donut bed is a sofa complaint.
  • For foam, press a fist into the core and time the recovery. Do this on the production compound, not on a showroom cousin.

Send one written correction list. A factory that wants to go to production on a voice note will stuff whatever was in the hopper that week.

MOQ, a first lot, and why mixed sizes lie

A bed MOQ is several floors stacked together: the fabric roll, the foam sheet or fibre bale, the vacuum bag size, the carton print. Asking for the number to be halved without changing the specification just moves the cost onto the unit.

On our own list a calming donut bed is 200 pieces and an orthopedic foam bed is 100 pieces. Treat those as the material talking. A first lot should be one type, two sizes at most, in a stock colour, with a carton you can put on a shelf or into an online photograph. Four diameters times six colours is twenty-four SKUs and a warehouse of the slow ones.

Donut diameters we actually run are 60, 70, 80 and 100 cm. Start with the two your customers already buy. Adding the 100 cm unit because it looks impressive in a listing is how you discover that the carton and the outbound shipping are a different business.

Where to buy: China direct, a trader, or a domestic distributor

The counterparty choice is the same as the rest of wholesale, and the freight makes it sharper for beds.

  • A factory is right when you want one construction, in volume, and you are ready to hold the specification yourself. You will also hold the cube plan.
  • A trading company is right when the order spans a bed and something else from a different workshop (a toy, a harness) and you want one file. AXISLINK is this counterparty.
  • A domestic distributor is right when you need mixed sizes next week and you cannot wait for the water. You will pay for that speed. When that trade-off is the whole decision, read China direct versus US distributors.

Beds are a poor dropship. They are bulky, they have a recovery problem, and a single-unit outbound from a far warehouse is how the customer receives a sad vacuum brick. If you are still choosing between dropshipping and a bulk lot, that arithmetic is in dropshipping versus wholesale.

Compliance is the fabric and the foam, not the photograph

A bed goes under a mouth and onto a floor. Restricted substances in dyes, in foam, and in waterproof coatings are the live questions. Name the regime in the purchase order. REACH and SVHC for Europe. For the United States, CPSIA can apply when a child could reasonably use the item, which is a live issue for small beds sold as pet products in a household with children. Broader material questions are in are pet products from China safe. Import mechanics are in importing to the USA and importing to Europe.

Ask for reports against your SKU, not a factory catalogue report for a similar cover. If you later put your brand on the cover, you are in a private label deal and the test file should already be in your name; the mechanics of that deal are in private label pet products.

Working with AXISLINK

AXISLINK TRADING LIMITED is a Hong Kong trading company buying through affiliated entities in Yiwu. For beds that means we hold the cover, the fill and the carton as one specification, and we will quote compressed carton sizes rather than lofted ones. We will not pretend a mixed rainbow of sizes is a first order.

Send the type, two sizes, a target quantity and the market you will sell into. We will come back with a bill of materials, a compressed packing list and a price broken into product, carton and freight. Request a quote from the contact page, or email sales@axislinktrading.com.
